At Central Ohio Compounding Pharmacy, we prepare three types of eye drop therapies in our sterile compounding lab. Each therapy is derived from your own blood but differs in processing methods, concentration of healing factors, and therapeutic goals.

Depending on the therapy prescribed, blood collection may take place either at our pharmacy or through one of our trusted laboratory partners before your customized eye drops are prepared.

Understanding Your Options

TherapyPrimary FocusCommon Uses
Autologous Serum Tears (AST)Mimics natural tears and supports ocular surface healthDry eye disease and ocular surface disorders
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Eye DropsEnhanced regenerative support through concentrated platelets and growth factorsMore significant ocular surface disease and healing needs

Your eye care provider will determine which therapy is most appropriate for your condition.

Autologous Serum Tears (AST)

A Personalized Approach to Ocular Surface Support

Autologous Serum Tears are often considered the first step beyond traditional dry eye treatments. Prepared from your own blood, these customized eye drops contain many of the same proteins, vitamins, growth factors, and nutrients naturally found in healthy tears.

Unlike artificial tears, which primarily provide lubrication, serum tears help nourish and support the ocular surface with naturally occurring components that more closely resemble your natural tear film.

Benefits of Autologous Serum Tears

  • Contains many components naturally found in healthy tears
  • Helps nourish and support the ocular surface
  • Preservative-free
  • Personalized from your own blood
  • May improve comfort, lubrication, and tear film stability

Common Uses

  • Moderate to severe dry eye disease
  • Ocular surface disease
  • Neurotrophic keratopathy
  • Corneal surface damage
  • Recovery following LASIK, PRK, or other ocular procedures

What Makes AST Different?

Autologous Serum Tears offer a personalized treatment option for patients whose symptoms persist despite traditional therapies. Because they contain naturally occurring tear components not found in artificial tears, they may provide additional support for ocular surface health and healing.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Eye Drops

Enhanced Regenerative Support

PRP Eye Drops build upon the foundation of serum tears by concentrating platelets within the plasma. These platelets contain naturally occurring growth factors involved in tissue repair, healing, and regeneration.

For patients with more significant ocular surface disease or delayed healing, PRP may provide additional regenerative support beyond traditional serum tears.

Benefits of PRP Eye Drops

  • Rich in naturally occurring growth factors
  • Supports tissue repair and regeneration
  • May promote corneal healing
  • Preservative-free
  • Personalized from your own blood
  • Designed to support recovery of the ocular surface

Common Uses

  • Chronic dry eye disease
  • Persistent epithelial defects
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Neurotrophic keratitis
  • Ocular surface disease
  • Recovery following ocular surgery

What Makes PRP Different?

Compared with serum tears, PRP contains a higher concentration of platelets and growth factors. These healing factors may help support tissue repair and recovery in patients requiring enhanced regenerative support.

Backed by Research

Endoret® PRGF® was developed by BTI Biotechnology Institute, a global leader in regenerative medicine with more than 25 years of research and innovation. The technology has been studied extensively in ophthalmology and regenerative medicine and continues to be utilized worldwide.

Research involving patients with ocular surface disease has demonstrated improvements in corneal health and patient-reported symptoms. In a multicenter study involving 153 patients, researchers reported significant improvements in corneal staining outcomes along with meaningful reductions in ocular discomfort.
